EAST CAPE ADVENTURE 2003

The second week in May the Bush Point Rod & Reel East Cape Adventure began at the Punta Colorada Hotel in Baja. Richie and the Reel Doc flew to Los Cabos and rented a VW from National to haul all the rods, reels, lures and coolers the 30 miles to Punta Colorada.

First day on the 29' cruiser was unbelievable! Marlin, tuna till our arms felt like lead. The yellowfin tuna slammed cedar plugs, feathers with double & triple hook ups on 20-30 lb. test light tackle.

Richie caught his first marlin and now believes the stories I have been telling him for years about fishing the Sea of Cortez.

The next day was tuna, tuna, tuna - 25 to 40 lbs.

Third day we stayed inshore and scored on pargo, sierra, pompano and the biggest triggers I have ever seen.

The fourth day, Reel Doc nailed a big dorado on a 40 year old lure that is still catching 'em!

The next fish, the Reel Doc hooked a big striped marlin of over 200 lbs. on 40 lb. test using a 1968 Truline 4X rod with a live mackerel. Finally brought to the boat after spectacular jumps and tail walks. The Reel Doc was ready for a complete body transplant.

Then it started again: dorado, tuna, tuna, and to top it off, skipjacks attacked everything while heading back.

All in all a great trip to Punta and a couple of trips in the VW to Buenavista and Los Barriles to visit old stomping grounds. No mention will be made of the return flight on Alaska except that Murphy's Law was in full effect! Two coolers of frozen fish did survive the flight.
